Paediatrics

Jane Macdonell, Consultant Paediatrician visited in 2014 to support and train paediatric & SCBU staff. She was involved in cerebral palsy clinics, and a newly developed ‘Gender Based Violence Clinic, who take seriously measures to identify, remedy and take legal action against perpetrators.
Three memorable experiences
- Cerebral palsy
clinic—children who become too big to carry often remain in their villages
becoming increasingly immobile and isolated
- Newly developed ‘Gender
Based Violence Clinics’ take seriously measures to identify, remedy and
take legal action
- My daughter spent time on
the surgical wards with children and adults. With those who were well but
bed bound, she engaged them in drawing pictures using coloured pens. Great
fun for everyone!
Visit outcome
- I have remained in touch
with a number of staff and am working on revising aspects of the
paediatric and neonatal guidelines
- I have made contact with
a UK charity ‘Physionet’ who ship second hand physiotherapy equipment to
developing countries
- I will be working with staff at SFH to identify their particular needs and develop a business case for SFH to receive equipment
